Are you curious about how we build a creator first culture at Patreon?

Hi creators!

I’m Tyler Palmer! I am Patreon’s first employee and VP of Ops. I wrote my first ever blog post and I wanted to share it with this community. Above all, I want you to know that we’re building a culture that puts creators first. We’re sick and tired of tech companies taking advantage of creators and seeing creators not properly compensated for their work. We’re busting our butts to make sure that those who give so much value to the world (YOU!), receive that value BACK. Thank you for trusting Patreon with your livelihood. We will not let you down.

If you have any thoughts about the post, I’d be excited to hear them.

Well, I’m British, so my instinctive reaction when faced with any kind of enthusiastic corporate presentation is utter cynicism and the desire to mock it mercilessly, something we call “taking the Mickey”. (Actually, we usually call it something else, but I’m not sure it would be considered appropriate here.)

So, fighting the temptation to pour scorn on everything I see, which would be misinterpreted,* it seems to me that what it boils down to is this: Make a proper effort to look after your clients and your staff, and things will go well for you. Which to me is something of a no-brainer, but it’s true that it’s something many companies tend to forget and so deserves to be said from time to time.

* If you think a Brit is taking the Mickey, you’re supposed to respond in kind. If you get offended, you’ll be accused of “taking yourself too seriously”, which is the worst insult in the British language. Part of my job involves trying to put out fires started by cross-cultural misunderstandings: trust me on this.

Having seen for myself what an amazing and friendly place Patreon is, I believe you easily! I don’t think I’ll ever have a company so I can apply these principles myself, but I’m really pleased to see the examples you guys set of a company that bases its success on respect and community rather than exploitation and profit-at-all-costs. I hope this is the future!
